Zinvestigations

Zinnias, an annual flower, are usually found in dry southern climates. Seeds are sowed ¼ inch into the soil, watered regularly, and must be kept at temperatures above 50°. The use of fluorescent grow lights or a greenhouse is highly suggested. Seedlings emerge in seven to ten days and once they are well established, fluorescent lights can be used to help the plant grow and watering should occur less frequently, only doing so when the top of the soil looks dry. In taking care of my Zinnias, making sure that the plant is not over watered will be essential, along with good air circulation in the soil, in order to prevent powdery mildew. Deadheading regularly once flowers are in bloom will also be necessary. Zinnias grow tall and mine are said to grow between 30-36”. If the accumulated weight of the top exceeds the weight of the planted pot, the pot may topple over. As I draw up my plans for the Zinnias’ temporary housing, and later when I design a permanent structure, I will need good air circulation, consistently warm temperature, plenty of sun, very little water, and a stable base.
